Ashdale Primary Students Shine at Woolworths Cricket Blast!

On Friday 7th March, a group of enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 students proudly represented Ashdale Primary School at the Woolworths Cricket Blast carnival held at Kingsley Reserve. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their cricket skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a fun and supportive environment.
Our teams played with great spirit, displaying excellent communication, fair play, and plenty of energy throughout the day. Whether batting, bowling, or fielding, every student gave it their all and did Ashdale proud!
As overall winners on the day, Ashdale ‘Boys Blue’ team have now qualified for the Metro North Regional Finals being held in Week 5 of Term 4. A huge congratulations, and best of luck, to all players competing.
A big thank you to the staff and parent volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly, and congratulations to all the students involved for being such fantastic ambassadors of our school.
Well done, Team Ashdale!

CCTV at Ashdale Primary School
The school has a comprehensive CCTV network. This allows the school administration to monitor visitors to the school outside of normal hours. It also comes in handy to identify acts of vandalism, graffiti and anti-social behaviour.
Unfortunately, the signage to inform the public that the school has CCTV has deteriorated. New signs have been ordered and should be installed in the near future. Please share this information with community members who may use the school grounds.
P&C News
President Report
Welcome to Term 2!
The end of Term 1 came quickly, and I was privileged to be an invited guest at the ANZAC Assembly in week 10. As always, it was a beautiful commemoration of the ANZACs, and I was able to lay a wreath on behalf of the P&C. Thank you to Mrs Leighton-Harris for her organisation of the assembly and including the P&C in this important date.
We kicked off Term 2 with Ride2School day on Friday which saw a huge number of students ride, scoot and walk to school. At lunchtime each year group had the opportunity to participate in the slow bike race, which is always enthusiastically attended, and we saw some seriously slow skills on display!
Our Mother’s Day stalls last week were incredibly successful and a heartfelt THANK YOU goes to all the wonderful parents, carers and community members who gave their time to run the stalls. Every moment you spent setting up, helping little ones choose gifts, or packing up afterwards made a real difference. Events like these simply wouldn’t happen without generous volunteers like you.
A very special thank you to our incredible fundraising coordinator, Nadia, who put so much time and effort into planning this event. She was the first to arrive and the last to leave each day, making sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Her passion and enthusiasm are a huge asset to our P&C, and our children are so lucky to have her.
I have been in discussion with the school to come up with a ‘wishlist’ of items that the P&C can contribute towards. These items can either be funded via the P&C outright, or it can be a larger joint project (much like the Ninja Playground). We welcome any suggestions from our community for consideration through the P&C email pandc.ashdaleps@outlook.com
Finally, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our last P&C meeting which focussed on the P&C running of the canteen. After robust and extensive discussion, it was decided that the P&C would hand the canteen back to the school for management. The P&C executive team have spent the last few weeks selling final stock and tidying up the canteen in preparation for handover to any new canteen tenants. This decision was not made lightly, as there are obviously many benefits to having an on-site canteen, however we continue to work closely with the school to find a successful long-term canteen solution for our community.
If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, we’d love to welcome you. Whether it’s 30 minutes or a few hours, your time means so much and helps create lasting memories for our kids. Keep an eye out for upcoming events, and we hope to see you at the next P&C meeting in week 7.

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Community Members,
Smooth Start to Term 2
Term 2 has commenced seamlessly, with students engaged and classes running smoothly. This follows the whirlwind of Term 1, during which all year levels successfully completed swimming lessons amidst the demands of NAPLAN assessments. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated staff and students for their collective efforts in making this possible.
Canteen Update
Our administration team is diligently working to secure a private provider to operate our school canteen. An Expression of Interest (EOI) is currently in progress. Should this initiative not come to fruition, we will explore alternative arrangements, including the possibility of employing canteen staff directly through the Department of Education. In the interim, the canteen temporary service is still running. You can register at http://www.schoollunchonline.com.au, choose from the lunch options and pay online. The cut off is now 9pm the night before as of tonight.
Student Arrival and Classroom Transitions
Each day, nearly 650 students enter the school grounds and transition into their classrooms with remarkable calmness and efficiency. This smooth process is a testament to the cooperation of our students and the support of our parent community.
Parent-Teacher Communication
We appreciate the understanding shown by our parent body regarding the importance of preserving the pre-school period for students to settle in. This consideration allows our teachers to focus on their instructional responsibilities. We encourage parents to schedule meetings in advance to discuss any concerns, ensuring that teachers can provide thoughtful and evidence-based responses.

Faction Cross Country Championship
The 2025 Faction Cross Country Championship for students in years 1 to 6 will take place in this term on Thursday, 29h May. Please make sure that your child is proudly wearing their Faction Shirt for this event.
We have a number of students who will be striving to win a ribbon or qualify for the Interschool Cross Country and we wish them luck in their endeavours. For most of our students who participate, they will do so to be involved in a whole school event, earn a point for their faction and achieve the personal goal of completing the cross country course which is always fabulous achievement.
Research shows that children who choose to make positive choices about being active and involved in events are far more likely to maintain these positive habits as they become adults, greatly reducing their risk of developing the many health issues associated with a lack of physical activity, so please encourage and motivate your child to be a participant. If you can find the time to help your child develop their fitness prior to this event, so they can participate to the best of their abilities, this would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.
All students in years 1 to 3 will participate in the Faction Cross Country Championship. Students in years 4-6 must nominate by informing their teacher that they wish to participate. To be eligible to participate, students in years 4-6 must demonstrate that they are capable of jogging the distance required for their year group without having to stop or walk, jogging slowly is perfectly acceptable. Students in years 4-6 who do not nominate to participate prior to the cross country event will not be able to compete on the day.
All students who participate and complete the course earn one point for their faction towards the Cross Country Shield and a certificate of participation. Students who place 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th earn bonus points for their faction and a place ribbon. The faction with the most points will win Ashdale’s Cross Country Shield for 2025.
The champion boy and girl in each year group receive a medallion acknowledging their achievement.
There are school records for students in years 4, 5 and 6. The time ran by the champion students in these year groups is recorded and engraved on to a shield which displays the names and times of all previous winners, this shield is displayed in the library. At present the Faction Cross Country school records are as follows:
Ashdale Primary Cross-Country School Records
Year Group | Gender | Distance | Year of Record | Name | Time |
4 | Girls | 1000m | 2021 | Emma Hill | 3:58 min |
4 | Boys | 1000m | 2022 2024 | Callan McKinney Adin Cavcic | 3:48 min 3:48 min |

7 | Girls | 2500m | 2009 | Shanea Tonkin | 10:29 min |
7 | Boys | 2500m | 2014 | Phillip Gut | 9:29 min |
The cross-country courses will remain the same as last year. This will mean, as has always been the case, that students in years 3,4 5 and 6 will run part of their course on a portion of the footpath which runs around the outside of the school. When learning their cross-country course during physical education lessons or class fitness and when participating in the cross-country championship, students will be appropriately supervised.
Family are encouraged to come down and support their children on the day.

Butler Slam Basketball Success
Ashdale had a successful day at the Butler Slam basketball competition, one of several regional primary school basketball competitions coordinated throughout the state by Basketball WA. Ashdale was represented by year 5 and year 6 students in both the boy’s and girl’s events.
A big congratulations to our boys who were undefeated throughout the day, winning a total of 6 games. The boys finished the day convincingly defeating Butler to become this year’s Butler Cup Champions. Also, well done to our girl’s team, improved throughout the day, dominating their last pool game to finish 3rd in their pool. They then went on to compete in a very competitive 3rd team pool playoff, losing 14 to 10 in very close game.
Congratulations to all our students on their outstanding effort and behaviour throughout the tournament.
The boys team have now qualified to compete against Western Australia’s best primary school basketball teams at the State Primary Basketball Champions Cup to be held at Bendat Basketball Centre on 24th November.

Harmony Day in LA32
To celebrate Harmony Day in LA32, the students chatted with their families about the countries and cultures they came from. In class we identified on a large world map these countries and then placed ribbon from our body outlines to the various countries. One picture attached shows our awesome and colourful map of the world. It is amazing that the LA32 minions come from over 20 different countries and backgrounds.
The students also discussed and wrote about the meaning behind the Harmony Day motto "everyone belongs".

P&C News
It’s been an incredibly busy start to 2025 for the P&C. At our general meeting in week 7 the P&C voted to cease running the school canteen and hand back the canteen to the school. We have now officially closed the canteen, which was a bittersweet moment for the P&C after 20 years of operation. We send a final ‘farewell and good luck’ to the canteen dream team of Caroline, Tania and Rebecca who have each decided to move on to new challenges. We also wish to thank all the volunteers who have helped to keep the canteen running over the years and the parents and community members for their ongoing support. There is a current expression of interest to seek a new on-site canteen provider through the school and updates will come from the school communications from here on.
We have some fabulous events coming up. This weekend (Sunday 6th April) we will be holding our inaugural car boot sale in the Westport Parade carpark.
We encourage those wishing to sell to sign up via the link: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/ashdales-first-car-boot-sale-registration-1288096915549?utm_experiment=test_share_listing&aff=ebdsshios and hope to see buyers there from 8am.
We’re also selling tickets for our magnificent Easter basket which has been kindly donated by Daniel Pastorelli MLA. The basket looks incredible and is filled with toys, treats and Easter-themed activities which will definitely help to keep the kids entertained over the holidays. Tickets are available now for $2 each via QKR and will be drawn on Thursday 9th April.
Finally, our Mother’s Day gift stall is coming up and we will be looking for volunteers to help run the stall and help students to pick out gifts for their mums. We will need help on Tuesday 6th May and Thursday 8th May - sign up via this link: SignUp.com Mobile
Thanks to all our fabulous supporters and we wish you all a safe and enjoyable school holidays.

A Note from the School Health Nurse
Water Safety
In Australia, drowning is the number one cause of death for children under five. To keep your children safe around water:
- Always stay with your children and watch carefully when they are near water, even if they can swim.
- Teach your children about water safety and make sure they learn how to swim.
- Have the whole family learn first aid.
- If you have a pool have it fenced with self-closing gates.
- Never leave them alone in the bath.
The Education Department offers low-cost VacSwim programs for school aged children. For more information on swimming lessons during summer via VacSwim go to www.det.wa.edu.au/curriculumsupport/swimming/detcms/portal/ and for water safety tips see www.lifesavingwa.com.au.
Chaplain's Chat
As we are nearing the end of Term 1, my sincere hope is that everyone is traveling well. It has been an exciting Term, seeing everyone settling into their new year groups and hearing excitable chattering as groups of students set off to their swimming lessons. What a privilege to be in Australia with it's beautiful swimming pools and beaches.
